The poster provides expert analysis and environmental research upon one of the largest Polish habitats - the "SuperUnit" building - situated in the very center of the city of Katowice. The goal of the study was to evaluate the building within the idea of sustainable development, namely the assessment of its technical and functional quality, knowledge of the location and environmental issues and also the social structure of the building together with the participatory evaluation of residents. The history of the construction of the building was analysed and its creator architect Mieczysław Król was interviewed. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Architecture, Silesian University of Technology, partly as the authors' own research and partly in collaboration with other architects and sociologists within the "PolSenior" grant entitled: Built environment and senior's needs - socio-cultural and urban dilemmas during the process of shaping seniors' residential environment, (Grant No. PBZ-MEIN-9.2/2006, 2007-2010) dedicated to old people. Expert analysis, which assessed the environmental, technical, functional and economic quality revealed several unsuitabilities of the building as to compare with the contemporary requirements for buildings of the same function. The biggest advantage seems to be easy access to a wide range of services in the neighborhood and the multiplicity of transport links resulting from the location in the heart of the city, which in turn generates a series of environmental stress factors adversely affecting the inhabitants. The participatory research conducted, where the three research techniques were applied: surveys, in-depth interviews and focus interview, gave us knowledge about activity and social participation of inhabitants, the various aspects of their attachment to the place, the sources of environmental stress and the problems of adaptation to life in the urban environment of multifamily housing. It should be noted that the huge residential building "SuperUnit" was judged more harshly in the evaluation of an expert than in the participatory assessment.
