Podano i wyjaśniono przyczyny i drogi strat węgla organicznego z gleby wskutek emisji gazowych - COz' CH4 (gazów cieplarnianych) oraz z powodu wymywania rozpuszczalnego węgla organicznego (RWO). Ponadto, podano sposoby sekwestracji węgla w glebie i sprzyjające jej metody gospodarowania materią organiczną (MO) w rolnictwie.

The problem of organic carbon (C-org), as an essential soil element that forms its quality was discussed on the background of the exchange with atmospheric carbon at the regional and global scale. There were presented the sources, forms, function and role of C-org that plays in the soil and in the environment, particularly in the grassland ecosystems. There were shown and explained the reasons and ways of losses of organic carbon from the soil on the account of gaseous emission - CO2 CH4 - greenhouse gases and as an effect of the leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Moreover, it was shown the mode of carbon sequestration in soil and a sound methods of organic matter (OM) management in agriculture. On the literature basis and on our own investigations, grasslands were presented as a friendly mode of soil use for organic carbon preservation. It was shown, that grassland ecosystems, playing an important part in the exchange between C-org in soil and CO2 in atmosphere, favours the limitation of carbon losses from the soil and takes part a significant role in the sustainable management of this element in the environment.
