The General Geographic Database (GGDB) comprises basic information on the territory of Poland. It is stored at the resolution adequate to the scales of 1 : 250 000, 1 : 500 000, 1 : 1 000 000 and 1 : 4 000 000 and structured within eight themes subdivided to twenty information layers. The GGDB has the status of an official register and it is used as a reference set for development of spatial information systems in Poland at the national and sub-national levels. It is also regarded as an input to the European and global SDI initiatives. One of the most important international undertakings in this field is developing INSPIRE Directive - a legal act defining European spatial information infrastructure. The draft version of the Directive consists of the main text and the annexes with the lists of data themes describing the thematic scope of the Infrastructure. The Implementing Rules of the Directive will be elaborated within the next two years. However reading the Annexes to the Directive today one can assess the usefulness of the GGDB for planned European data store. The paper presents the analysis of the General Geographic Database from the point of view of the themes of INSPIRE Directive. Most of GGDB data can feed the European Infrastructure, however some modifications and possible extensions will be required after elaboration of the Directive.s Implementing Rules. Then the structure of the GGDB would be adjusted to the INSPIRE needs. One of the conclusion of the analysis says that the themes of the Annex I of the Directive can be filled with the data coming from GGDB. The remaining Annexes are more specific from the thematic viewpoint, however many of the themes listed there have their relevant data layers in the GGDB. In the first period of implementing INSPIRE in Poland the GGDB will serve as a principal data source.
