Niniejszy artykuł odnosi się do kwestii bezpieczeństwa przestrzeni w toczącym się w Europie i USA dyskursie pomiędzy konwencjonalną, powojenną praktyką urbanistyczną a neotradycyjnym modelem urbanistyki spod znaku nowego urbanizmu. Oba te kierunki reprezentują zasadniczo odmienne koncepcje przestrzeni bezpiecznej.

The paper brings up the problem of valuating urban models in the context of safe space. Two opposite models of creating safe space have been presented. The first one derives from the idea of Defensible Space by Oscar Newman and is related to concepts of territoriality, semi-public and semi-private spaces and natural surveillance. Urban developments realised according to this idea often constitute isolated enclaves and result in disconnectivity of urban network and space fragmentation. The second safe space model, described by Jane Jacobs, called traditional urban structure, based on a continuous street network presupposes an increase of safety parameters with more permeable and open urban system and direct relation between public and private areas. Results of Space Syntax research in the field of crime prevention have been discussed as reasons for traditional, integrating urban model in order to create safe living space.
