Scharakteryzowano łańcuchy transportu kombinowanego towarzyszącego i nietowarzyszącego zwracając szczególna uwagę na ich uczestników. Przeanalizowano możliwe do zastosowania w warunkach polskich technologie przewozu jednostek ładunkowych z punktu widzenia przewoźników drogowych i operatorów kolejowych. Scharakteryzowano rynek potencjalnych uczestników transportu kombinowanego w warunkach polskich przyjmując za kryterium rodzaje pojazdów wykorzystywanych obecnie przez przewoźników drogowych.

As regards the type of loading unit used in combined transport, we can recognize three kinds of them, variously wide-spread across Europe dependently on the allowance of the means of transport and on the nature of the haulage: the swap body and container are the most common loading units used in combined rail-road transport, while containers are mostly used for traffic based on sea/inland ports, semi-trailers and trucks with trailer or not (using as a load unit in Ro-La). While in road transport the number of semi-trailers has been constantly growing, in combined transport the total numbers transported and the share of semi-trailers has been marginally. The state of the art analyses of share of loading units in combined transport can see those dominant containers and swap-bodies. There are at least two reasons (in our opinion) of such slight share of semi- trailers: o lack of semi trailers for vertical transshipment in terminals, o road hauliers concerning in semi- trailers delivered to combined transport operators in terminals (unaccompanied transport). In order to organize a combined transport network in Poland we should identify the market of road hauliers and after that, choose the combined transport technology and transshipment. Forwarders and hauliers can be grouped into four different profiles, determined by their business strategy towards the use of semi trailers and swap-bodies: 1. Pure road users, who optimize their semi- trailers equipment either in terms of maximum volume, capacity or both. They see no decision criteria if the semi-trailer is compatible for combined transport (vertical transshipment) or not. Combined transport is no option because the optimized semi-trailer equipment does not suit the technical requirement in most cases or as the future supply of combined transport is regarded as too much questioned. 2. Such users, who invest actively into equipment that is mostly suitable for combined transport but clearly less competitive if it is used on road only. They are planning on a long-term base with a stable supply of combined transport on some axes. 3. Such users, who invest actively for some markets they serve into combined equipment, but not into semi-trailers; they invest into swap-bodies, because they believe in the superiority of swap-bodies for their requirements. They are predominant in unbroken and balanced combined transport chain. 4. Such occasional users of combined transport, who deploy semi-trailers both in pure road and in combined transport for some of their target markets. For them, combined transport could be an option, but not if it cost competitiveness on road. They do not invest specially into equipment which is much less competitive in pure road transport. Regarding the mentioned above, we start organizing combined transport network using horizontal technology transshipment like Cargo Beamer or Rolling Highway.
