EN

The use of new measurement technologies in forestry environment is a standard nowadays. This results from the use of digital maps and continuous looking for new technologies which provide precise and fast methods for forestry data capture. GPS and laser rangefinder are used in forest environment but we not always realize what is the quality of measurements. Lack of cohesion between the measurements and digital maps often result from mistakes in the source analogue maps. For instance, it was calculated by geodetic survey that mean error of landmarks for LZD Rogów digital map was equal to 9.8 meters. This means that every user of such maps must think about its weakness. We examined the use of GPS receiver and laser rangefinder in forest environment. It turned out that GPS should not be used for small area measurements because of possible big mistakes in area calculation. In this situation it is a good idea to use laser rangefinder but we must remember that good visibility is needed. The results of measurements should be generalized by smoothing and simplifying algorithms. It makes our data more useful. In spite of many problems which are connected with sophisticated measurement technologies we should use them because they assure faster and more precise data capture than the old ones.
