Growing interest in the state of global environment coupled with increasing awareness of threats and immense development of Information Society brought about an ever growing need for spatial information about environment. A special role plays .The Sixth Environmental Action Programme. for the years 2002.2012 established by the EU. In last years we witness uncontrolled development of information systems. The INSPIRE initiative and establishing European Spatial Data Infrastructure should stimulate coordination of data gathering and distribution for the purposes of European environmental policies. The paper presents legal and organizational principles of functioning of SDI with special emphasis on initiatives regarding information about forests. In the conclusion main advantages were presented, supporting participation of Polish forestry in SDI.
