The paper presents experience connected with computerization of works supporting geological analyses carried out in Geological Departments of the copper mines of KGHM Polska Mied. S.A. The first works were undertaken at the end of sixties in Copper Research and Designing Units in Wroc3aw, where the nucleus of the Geologist IT system was conceived. The system was modified and extended with development of computer technology and increased needs for computerized analyses carried out in Geological Departments of the mines. The current form of the system was elaborated in The Institute of Raw Materials and Energy Management of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). The basic source of information about deposits are measurements of copper content in vertical profile of deposit rocks performed by geological services of mines. Mass character of this information requires an efficient mechanism of their recording and processing. We may speak about the first version of the Geologist IT system after creation in 1974 of a database from attestations of groove trials and drill holes stored on memory bands, from database management programs and from the first functional software. The system was run of the computer of Odra series. In this period basic works connected with deposit management were computerized to the extent adequate to the possibilities of computer hardware. We should distinguish in particular: management system of data from drill holes and groove trials, software package for forecasting deposit parameters in selected areas, recording and deposits balancing system in the mining area. The second stage of computerization was connected with introduction of personal computers. Transfer of the computer from the calculation center inaccessible for a geologist to his desk was a very important change. This greatly increased the scope of computerized works connected with deposit management, and in particular: coordinates of groove trials and connected with them analysis of deposit parameters were introduced, registration and analysis of components accompanying copper were introduced, functions of earlier developed programs were broadened. The current form of the geologist system results from the improvement of the earlier version of the system based on program platform of DOS operating system. The new system is based on MS Windows program platform. The programs of the system were carried out in Delphi language. This language constituting an object-oriented development of Pascal language and it is at the same time a strong database instrument. The present version of the system is composed of four subsystems: subsystem Geol to serve analysis of deposit parameters in selected areas, especially in exploration blocks, subsystem Geol_e to serve analysis of deposit parameters in exploitation fields, subsystem St to serve analysis of content in the deposit of components accompanying copper, subsystem SEZA to serve recording and balancing deposit resources in assumed time intervals. Optimization of the system was made at the beginning of subsequent stages of its development. It was connected with the use of computer hardware of new generation and application of new software. Optimization of the system carried out this way was burdened with the need to maintain some structures of databases and calculation algorithms. An alternative for further extension of the geologist system is taking over of its function by an integrated computer system solving the problems of geological service of the mine, designing and exploitation of the deposit and economic optimization of the mining process and processing. Attempts to introduce such a system in KGHM Polska Mied. S.A. have been carried out for several years.. However, perspectives to take over the functions of the geologist system by an integrated computer system seem to be distant. The above described substantive functions of the geologist system result from accumulation of specific needs of geological services expressed during all the years the system was developed. Most of them are certainly not realized by the integrated computer systems. Implementation of the functions of the geologist system into the integrated system seems very difficult and expensive. The only reasonable solution seems to be working out of the forms of both systems to operate together.
