EN

European Ecological Network Natura 2000 is aimed at environmental protection in the European Union. Identification of areas takes place by means of indicating valuable natural habitats, species of birds, animals and plants valuable from the point of view of the EU. In the places where they occur, after fulfilling several criteria the Natura 2000 areas are determined. Poland began collecting information necessary to establish the network in the years 1998-2000. In the beginning the information was collected on the basis of two directives so called wild birds directive and habitat directive and then on the basis of the law on nature preservation and a number of ordinances issued by the Ministry of Environment. In 2004, the first nature conservation areas within the EU Natura 2000 project were submitted to the European Commission and in the subsequent years the network was extended and supplemented. At present, the works of identifying the areas are coming to the end. The collected natural information about the areas provided the basis for creation of data management system. Constantly supplemented system assures up-to-date information about the boundaries of the areas, ownership structure and necessary nature information. The need to make reference to the boundaries of the areas in the terrain as another form of nature preservation in Poland resulted in the necessity of their more precise definition. Data on the areas are made available by means of a website which is aimed at popularization of information about Natura 2000 in Poland. The INSPIRE Directive adopted this year will have an important impact on Natura 2000 network.
