The paper presents various aspects of open software used for processing, storage and making available geoinformation, particularly within the framework of geoinformation infrastructure. The author presents various terms used in this area and their definitions. The author compared an open software with its opposite . most often a commercial software. The comparison came out in favour of the former and this is in accordance with the observations related to general information software. The reason of these trends we should attribute to the fact that an open software is is worked out in an open way in broadly understood community involved in a given area. This feature cannot be attributed to a .close. software. Projected building of the European Geoinformation Infrastructure presents a great challenge to the initiatives on behalf of open software and many open projects in this area are mature to such an extent that in near future new versions of open software will be able to provide the base for the systems of this infrastructure.
