The paper presents the employment of free software for the implementation of spatial data infrastructures (SDI). Even though the level of abstraction is relatively high, a possible architecture is examined which allows for a web based sharing of spatial data by means of interoperable web services. A particular attention is given to access control in such environments because issues associated with user authentication and authorization gain momentum on international scale these days. The paper concludes with authors. personal opinion. According to this opinion it is expected that implementation of advanced SDI functionality will require integration of best of breed free software and proprietary software. No doubt, this opens up an array of business opportunities. But where business opportunities are expected, there is always potential and need for academic and industrial R&D.
