W końcu XIX wieku Lwów był ważnym ośrodkiem administracyjnym, handlowym i kulturalnym Galicji, co czyniło go jednym z bardziej znanych miast Europy Środkowej. W tym czasie wzrosła także liczba mieszkańców z 45 tys. w pierwszym dziesięcioleciu XIX w. do 150 tys. pod koniec tego stulecia [8, s. 100]. Wzrost liczby mieszkańców wpłynął na zmianę charakteru domów mieszkalnych, zwłaszcza budowanych na terenie przedmieść, pierwotnie półmiejskich. W 1873 roku zarejestrowano w mieście 2594 domy, głównie parterowe i jednopiętrowe, w 1900 r. natomiast ich liczba wzrosła do 43 600 i były to głównie kamienice dwu- lub trzypiętrowe. Jednocześnie, wraz z rozwojem przemysłu lokalnego, powstawało wiele zakładów produkcyjnych, których wyroby zasilały rynek miejscowy.

The results of examinations of facture treatment of Lvov houses from the turn of the 19th and 20th century, are given in the paper. Building expansion transformed beyond recognition the character of Lvov suburbs: if in 1873 there were 2594 dwelling houses as a rule one- and two-storeyd, in 1900 the quantity of dwelling houses was equal to 43 600 (three^ and four-storeyed). That period embraces the last stage of eclectic development and the birth ancy' flourishing of modern style. Compositions of house elevations were shaped in accordance with the classic canon of arranging elements, while architectonic details were formed individually and in a diversified manner. An interesting combination of various plaster textures played an important role in facade decoration. During the examinations over 500 houses were analysed and 40 variants were photographically documented. Some of these variants distinguish themselves by a singular expressiveness of design and these have been presented in the table and the photographs.
