EN

High-tech as a style in architecture is characterized by certain assumptions and applied methods rather than by the similarity of form. Representatives of this style affirmed the technological progress but, at the same time, they recognized the necessity of controlling it. As apologists of continual changes they preferred flexibility in architecture. To that end they applied open plan solutions and used bridge-like constructions (latticework and suspended structures), with stairs and other servicing units being left outside the building. The supreme exponents of the style used and refined methods of complicated préfabrication and developed the cooperation with representatives of different technological and scientific disciplines. As a result, the most prominent buildings may be compared cither with unique works of art or with the prototypes from industrial production lines. Particular interest in the environment conservation resulted in the creation of intelligent buildings. The technological solutions used arc the synthesis of the newest technological achievements combined with traditional natural ways of energy gain.

Nazwa architektura high tech funkcjonuje podobnie jak nazwy innych kierunków najnowszej architek-tury. Używa się ich tak, jakby ich znaczenie nie budziło wątpliwości, a tymczasem nie wiadomo właściwie co one naprawdę oznaczają. Nazwy odnoszą się do kierunków żywych i wciąż zmieniających się, zarówno w sferze programowej, jak i realizacyjnej i to jest zasa-dnicząprzyczyną ich niejednoznaczności. Powstaje więc dylemat: definiować, czy zaniechać prób definiowania? Za podejmowaniem prób przemawiają zasady nauki: wszelkie poznanie wymaga wprowadzenia porządku - ujęcia empirycznego materiału w ramy klarownej klasyfikacji i stosowania ścisłej terminologii. Przeciw temu stanowisku podnoszą się argumenty antyscjentystycz-nej, postmodernistycznej argumentacji. Wskazują one, że wszelkie poprawne klasyfikacje są wysoce nieprzydatne dla wyjaśnienia zawiłej struktury zewnętrznego, zwłaszcza ludzkiego świata.
