This is a part of a wider elaboration which has, as its aim, the analysis of architectonic solutions and spatial arrangements being the product of changes and historically varying relations between opposing and complementing tendencies, penetrating both the life of communities and individuals. One of these tendencies on which -due to its special artistic meaning - accent has been laid, is the aloneness of choice, a kind of "islandness" (isolation) which has been revealed in architecture and town-planning in the form of "island" motifs. Another tendency, complementary to it, similarly as the first one necessary for health as well as mental and physical balance, is the process of integration, uniting, joining and penetrating. Hadrian's "villa on the island" is a unique work in which his individuality as well as his philosophical views, fed by many voyages and contacts with the cultures of the East, are revealed. Although this is a unique object, in its functional arrangement it corresponds to the logic and outline of a Roman house. However, its form and symbolism are incomparable. It combines the heroic ethos of a stoic's aloneness establishing a dialogue beyond time and history with philosophers spiritually related to him. The sphere and the circle are an image of the soul, also the symbol and analogy of the Demiurge, the Universe, which perhaps is also conveyed by the coded information expressed by the value of 150 Roman feet, which is the span of the Pantheon dome and the outer circumfer-ence of the villa on the island.
