In the last years a set of factors related to the progress in geomatics and increasing need for spatial information about environment have led to emerging field of object-based image analysis. This technique became the relevant innovation among other .traditional. methods of image classification. Recently the object-based analysis has become a new paradigm in geomatics, not only a classification technique. In the article the object based approach is discussed as a technology of object-based image classification and a new paradigm for object-based spatial analyses. The historical developments are also presented. Attention is paid to results of the first conference in this field (1st International Conference on Object-Based Image Analysis, OBIA 2006), which took place in Salzburg. Finally, some recommendations are presented.
