Homogenization of varistor microstructure ceramics using metal oxide modified Bi2o3

Since the 1970s Bi2O3 has been successfully applied in metal-oxide varistors to introduce the nonlinear variable impedance into ZnO ceramics. For good electrical performance of the varistor a homogeneous microstructure is essential. The basis of the varistor's microstructure is the ZnO grains that are separated by an inter-granular layer formed by a Bi2O3-rich phase and the products of the reactions of other metal-oxide additives between each other and with the ZnO. In this work the ability to obtain a homogeneous inter-granular layer by using Bi2O3 modified with a choice of various metal-oxide additives is demonstrated. The formula of the modified Bi2O3 was (Bi085Meo.i5)203. The uniform, homogenized distribution of the Bi2O3-rich inter-granular layer in the Zno98[(Bio.85Meo.|5)203]o.o2Oo.98 system was achieved for Me = Al, Si, Sn or Sb. The Bi2O3 modification using oxides of Pb, Mn, Co or Sr resulted in agglomerating of the Bi2O3 phase. In the case of SrO, abnormal grain growth also took place. When the Zno9g[(Bi0.g5Meo.i5)203]o.o20o.98 system was enriched with typical varistor additives, the best homogeneity of the inter-granular layer was achieved for the case of Sb2O3 and SnO2 modifiers.
