During the last years the impact and demand for GIS education has tremendously grown in colleges and universities. The role of university and colleges community changed in the last years and now is to educate students in the geographic information science in general, not only in the GIS software. GIS education goes beyond teaching software, which is a simple training, and it is about teaching of a whole new way of thinking and solving problems. For a GIS professional to be really creative in the use of the GIS technology, he or she must have a broad perspective and understanding of the wide range of applications of GIS. Moreover we should consider spreading use of the GIS technology in the public life, since it became one of the IT technologies in the e-society. It implicates necessity to educate the spatially aware society. Presented article provide us with the practical hints regarding the technical and administrative issues related to establishment of successful GIS programs in academic environment. However, some of the practical advises may be useful for colleges and other educational organizations. Presented content is based on the world wide experience among the academic and colleges society, which has been collected and commented by the ESRI`s education solution managers. The process of establishing the GIS program has been divided into 3 phases which cover planning, acquisition and management for GIS programs. Each of those included some specific subjects that can help to avoid critical and typical problems such as long-term tasks for the faculty and staff regarding updating and upgrading the laboratory equipment, managing the laboratories, financial obstacles, and many more. This document discussed also issues that need to be considered before the purposes and goals of academic GIS program will be defined, the needs to proceed the market analysis in order to place the program among the others existing in the city or region and can help to promote the program, as well as acquire necessary funds through clearly defined benefits that such a program may produce to university and local society. There are also defined the practical advises regarding the database required for teaching and research purposes, the technical requirements of hardware, software and other devices such as GPS units, I/O devices and other equipment, laboratory space organization, laboratory staff etc. The paper include also information how the ESRI supports the spatial education. The company is very aware of the importance of spatial education for the sustainable development and strongly focused on helping in any form of such activities. Therefore ESR1 cooperates with the organizations such as AGILE, UNIGIS, UCGIS; provides the distance learning thorough the Virtual Campus portal, provides many technical and GIS concepts services in the Internet, and publishes books covering the technology and GIS concepts, GIS case studies, GIS management issues etc. The ESRI Press has published also few books providing the curriculum materials for teachers. ESRI has created also licensing programs dedicated to the educational community. Those programs can help universities, colleges, schools, libraries and museums use the GIS software for their purposes. ESRI believes that this effort in field of education would help to understand the world and enhance collaboration in term of sustainable development for future population.
