Geospatial technologies in postgraduate GIS study program at Wroclaw University of Technology

Abstrakty
In the paper, the main directions of teaching in the area of new geospatial technologies are presented on the example of postgraduate study of Geographic Information Systems at the Geoengineering, Mining and Geodesy Faculty of the Wrocław University of Technology. The program of the study takes into account new technologies of acquisition, processing and making available geospatial data, and is focused on Internet engineering and subjects connected with interoperability, metadata and data wholesalers. In the first semester, stress is put on getting familiarised with elements of IT applied in GIS, on databases management systems and numerical maps systems. The programme of this semester covers in particular: m fundamentals of IT systems (architecture, operation systems, information network systems, making network resources available). These classes are aimed at presenting popular operation systems (Windows, Linux), how to use them and on what principle they operate, m methods of data acquisitions (analytical and digital photogrammetry, satellite positioning) and building of numerical maps, m fundamentals of databases (MySQL, Oracle, MsSQL Server). These classes are aimed at showing how to store these data and how to manage them (add, remove, modify) with the uses of SQL language). In the second semester, after getting acquainted with fundamentals of IT and GIS, participants of the study are familiarised with more advanced technologies. The program covers: standards of data exchange (XML, taking into account SVG language for vector graphics GML language for recording of geographic data), dynamie WWW pages (PHP language, access to databases through WWW page, data management from the WWW page level) and combining these two approaches (access to databases through WWW page, spatial analysis and visualization of results). Within the framework of the program of the study students prepare diploma thesis. Those which are worth mentioning as closely connected with new geospatial technologies are enumerated in the paper. It should be noted that postgraduate study only familiarises students with new geospatial technologies and does not prepare them for creation of Internet services with the use of script languages, of databases and SVG vector graphics as methods of publication of maps in the Internet: it does not prepare for creation of professional applications of data management, data exchange and making them available to other entities. Graduates of the study gain sufficient knowledge to work in the positions where such technologies are used or where development of a given institution and its cooperation with environment is decided.
