EN

Spatial Information Systems (SIS) have become a tool for specialists in ever growing range of areas. Forestry, nature conservation and broadly understood nature resources management are typical applications of SIS in scientific, administration and economic activities. In the paper, principles, on which a postgraduate course SIS for forestry and nature conservation is organized in the Faculty of Forestry, are presented. Apart from the curriculum, some observations and opinions of participants are set forth. The curriculum of the course was designed to cover alt main stages of acquisition, processing and making spatial data available. Five principle sections are distinguished: data for SIS and their sources; processing of information in SIS; visualization - making the data available; tools - software: and finally - building SIS. The detailed program contains the following issues: introduction into the problems of information systems in general and spatial information systems in particular; data acquisition for geometric databases of SIS; visualization of data, basic knowledge of cartography; geodetic and cartographic documentation centres, land and building registers; remote sensing and photogrametry as sources of SIS; digital terrain model (DTM); software for building SIS and DTM; image processing systems: technology of building SIS; public access to SIS data; application of SIS in forestry and nature conservation. In the two courses organised so far 25 persons took part, who at present are managing systems in their institutions or are preparing themselves to carry out such tasks. The curriculum of the course included 117 hours of lectures and 153 hours of practicals, and the classes were performed by 24 academic teachers.
