Zintegrowane systemy informatyczne wspomagające zarządzanie klasy ERP wywarły, i wywierają nadal, ogromny wpływ na funkcjonowanie organizacji gospodarczych na całym świecie. W latach dziewięćdziesiątych XX w. gwałtownie wzrosła skala inwestycji związanych z implementacją powyższych rozwiązań. Według firmy doradczej The McKinsey Company przedsiębiorstwa na całym świecie wydały w latach 1990-2000 ok. 300 mld USD na zakup i wdrożenie systemów ERP [9, s.101]. W 2000 r. 60% firm z listy FORTUNE 1000 dokonało już implementacji co najmniej jednego podstawowego modułu systemu ERP [1, s. 4]. Po chwilowej stagnacji w latach 2000-2003, rynek zintegrowanych systemów informatycznych wspomagających zarządzanie ponownie zaczął dynamicznie się rozwijać i w 2003 r. oszacowany został na 23 mld USD.

In many cases contemporary enterprises are coming up against difficulties resulting from ERP implementation projects. The aim of this paper is to show some necessary conditions which must be fulfilled to achieve the expected benefits from the enterprise system investment. After presenting a set of critical success factors, the author discusses the findings form his research. The study was based upon both detailed analysis of three case studies of ERP implementation projects and data collected from a survey, which was carried out among Polish manufacturing companies. The findings confirm the importance of the presented set of critical success factors. They also show, that in the Polish context, most ERP implementation projects failures are caused by inappropriate ERP teamwork and composition, insufficient top management support, the lack of a clear business plan and vision as well as the lack of appropriate management information.
