Combustion of coal in its unprocessed form is an emission source of environmentally toxic compounds. Thise emissions are higher when both the efficiency of combustion process and the technical abilities of flue gas purifying are low, thus making the quality of combusted fuels veryimportant. The highest emissions result from fuel combustion in individual domestic appliances and municipal small-power industrial units. Besides the particulate emissions (soot, fly ash) and gases (CO2, CO, SO2, NOx), flue gases also contain organic pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins, furans, POPs (persistent organic pollutants), aliphatic hydrocarbons, benzene and its homologues, aldehydes and ketones, VOCs, phenol and its alkyl derivatives, heterocompounds of sulfur and nitrogen, and heavy metals. The paper presents results of a study on the abatement of pollution emission from solid fuel combustion tests with DESONOX catalyst addn. Combustion tests were carried out in small domestic appliances. Investigations proved that addition of DESONOX catalyst to compacted fuel, significantly decreases not only NOx and SO2 emission, but also the emission of organic compdounds (VOCs and 16 PAHs according to EPA).
