The mixture of monocarboxylic (butyric, valeric and caproic) acids separated from the waste stream produced by the catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone was used to esterify neopentyl polyhydric alcohols and polyalkylene glycols (PAGs). Polyol ester oils synthesized from pentaerythritol or trimethylolpropane with a mixture of waste carboxylic acids C4-C6 were characterized by viscosity grades ISO VG 10 and VG 22 and were found to display properties comparable to those of commercial biodegradable ester oils. Studies carried out in order to obtain a novel assortment of base oils showed that the modification of commercial PAGs via esterification of hydroxyl groups with a mixture of monocarboxylic acids C4-C6 changed some of the PAG properties which gain importance when considering the usability of the PAG as a base oil for the production of lubricants.
