Investigations of hydrotreating of middle distillate (fraction boiling in the range of diesel oil), obtained in a vacuum residue upgrading (H-Oil) unit, have been carried out over a commercial Ni-W/Al2O3 catalyst. Due to relatively high nitrogen content (above 1000 wt ppm), the raw distillate shows an instability in the color and some tendency to form sediments. Moreover, it is characterized by higher aromatics content and lower cetane index than corresponding straight-run petroleum fractions. Experiments of hydrotreating were performed in a process development unit with a trickle-bed reactor, at temperatures 350 and 380°C, under a total pressure of 7.5 MPa and in the LHSV range from 0.5 to 2.0 h-1. The products showed the nitrogen content below 100 wt ppm, the color of these products being light and much more stable than that of the feedstock. The aromatics content was reduced, which resulted in an improvement of cetane index (from 45 in the feedstock to 48-49 in the hydrotreating products).
