Plastic mechanical components such as plastic gears are now established as frictional parts without lubricant. Trying to find polymer-polymer phase system giving high wear resistance and low friction coefficient, the wear and friction of polypropylene/acrylanitrile butadiene styrene (PP/ABS) blends sliding against polymeric surfaces were studied. Effect of different combinations of ABS and PP on the wear and friction of both PP/ABS blend and thermoplastic rings were investigated. Hardness ratio of mating surfaces and tribological behavior of PP/ABS blends were correlated. The results show that the blending of polypropylene with acrylanitrile butadiene styrene reduces the wear rate and friction coefficient of PP/ABS blends, reduces the wear rate of thermoplastic rings and the fluctuation of the friction coefficient. As a result of increasing the hardness ratio of mating surfaces both the wear rate and friction coefficient of PP/ABS sliding against thermoplastic rings decreased. The minimum wear rate of PP/ABS blends depends on both the percentage of PP in the blend and the thermoplastic ring material.
