Abstrakty

Lightweight construction is a major trend in machine tool building, which results from the need for high speed cutting and the conditions of the present technique. Research is carried out in institutes world-wide on lightweight construction by either design and/or choice of materials. A novel technique to make lightweight construction is to use hollow spheres composites. Investigations of the material show good properties, such as low thermal conductivity and high damping, when compared with the properties of metal foam. Applications of hollow sphere composites including the table of a milling machine and a robot arm are demonstrated.
