The road to an information society in Poland

The present situation that concerns computer networks in Poland is connected with political and economical changes which have been taking place recently. However, the first plans of computer networks, the concepts and concrete technological solutions were considered many years ago and some of them were even applied in Poland. Some ideas from that time have a substantial influence on the present situation and should be taken into account in future projects. Therefore, it seems reasonable to present the conditions of the development of computer nets in Poland. The analysis of projects and pilot programs that had been arising since the middle seventies is very interesting. At the same time, with the activities undertaken by research centres, the first circumstances of the developing information society in Poland were observed. The western observers are rather surprised that the efforts to make a condition for fast development of the information society in Poland have such a long tradition. Looking to the past, one can compare the present problems with access to information, with the first idea in that field, and one can more reasonably propose future solutions.
