Coals of different rank from low rank coal up to anthracite and separated lithotypes were investigated in terms of their sorption properties for recognition of the relationship between their petrographic and colloidal structire. Solvents of different chemical nature-methanol, benzene, pyridine and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone were use in the sorption experiments. The sorption effect was evalueted by gravimetric technique as an increase of coal mass every 24h for 9 days. The rate and extent of sorption depend on the rank of coal and their lithotypes and on the chemical structure of solvent used. According to the increasing sorption ability in coals the solvents can draw up as follows: NMP>benzene>methanol>pyridine. Generally, the amount of adsorbed solvent vapours decreases with the increasing rank of coal. Vitrains explanationof sorption effects connected with coal properties and petrographic composition is given.
