In this article, the need for an evaluation of the reliability (durability) of machines in the phase of their designing is argued, and a method is formulated that permits to perform such evaluations for sliding friction nodes (pairs). The prognostic method is based upon the so called generalized model of wearing where the tribotechnical properties of materials describe two complex constants: K, x. Information problems resulting from the accepted approach are also mentioned, as well as some solutions that fulfil these needs. The method is illustrated by examples of analysis of a slide bearing functioning in the presence of abrasive material (dust particles).
