In the article I suggest a distinction between integration-oriented management actions and refer to the polarity between the two. I first spell out the dimensionally of the integration pattern and autonomy pattern of management actions and the dynamics of the relations between these two kinds of design principles. I then apply this perspective to business organizations in the conviction that this transfer will be fruitful for generating a general framework of the business control process. Assuming there is dialectic tension between integration-oriented control patterns and autonomy-oriented control patterns, one can interpret different control process conceptions as particular combinations in balance between the two. With this descriptive framework I hope to open up a fruitful way to describe the role of middle and lower management levels in an explorative way.
