Digital protection against diode failure for brushless exciters

Abstrakty
This paper presents a newly designed digital protection against diode failure for brushless exciters for synchronous generators and motors. There have been a brief explanation of the advisability of such a type of the protections. There are presented two possible configurations of the proposed protection. At one configuration the protection is an integral part of the excitation control system, at second as an independent separate unit, equipped with a measuring transducers system. The article presents the assumptions and description of the proposed method for detecting diode failure. Presented simulation results confirm correctness of the algorithm adopted for the implementation of protection functions. Presented waveforms were, taken by running protection, working as an integral part of the excitation control system of a synchronous motor. They were obtained during tests with open diode failure in the rectifier circuit. Operation at protection work in real conditions was assessed positively.
