Decision situations are related to various aspects of operations in an organisation. Hence the content of information included in a decision maker's expectations goes beyond defining criteria and setting a decision problematic. Finding a suitable approach is a task for an analyst who assists a decision maker in the decision process. The following paper sunthesises premises used in analysing decision situations, which result in a choice of a multicriteria method to perform calculations. The concluded guidelines can be used as a vocabulary of analytical knowledge, which allows to select a multicriteria method suitable for a given context of a decision situation.
