The impact of the development of transport infrastructure on the regional development (especially the development of the road network) has multiaspect and heterogeneous nature. It is accomplished so to say on various levels, and it should be perceived both in the aspect of time, and from the side of "channels" of interaction, the arrangement and interrelations between which are to large extent detennined by the researcher's point of view and his/her individual approach to this issue (these effects can be partially captured by the cost-benefit method of analysis). An attempt to find a common denominator for these varied approaches is the presentation of the impact of the development of transport infrastructure on the regional development in respect of demand and supply type effects. The fist ones result more from short-term development stimuli directly associated with the execution stage of a road investment, and then with the utilisation of a new facility. Therefore, in short, they are related to the creation of a demand for labour and capital. This sphere to large extent overlaps with the short and medium-term effects. The effect of an investment on the side of demand is clearly visible. However, these effects are not sufficiently described by the literature. It is also noticeable that there is a lack of their methodology and analyses, elaboration of unambiguous models, etc. (Most commonly they are studied in a direct manner through aggregation of statistical data concerning local employment, utilisation of various materials in the investment process and other means of production, the activity of construction companies, etc.). Longer in term and other type effects are also present on the side of supply. They are related to the permanent shaping of the social and economic environment in the region by the presence of road infrastructure itself, and building of macroeconomic conditions for its development: this is why it gives them their supply oriented nature. These implications are associated with the improvement of the investment attractiveness, increased efficiency of companies operating within the area, the presence of the so-called scale effect, better condition of trading, and the increase of the standard of living of the local community, broadening of the possibilities of their recruitment, creation of more convenient conditions for the development of tourism, etc. This type of broader implications of the development of transport infrastructure is studied using advanced econometric models based upon statistical and mathematical methods, which, as a rule, are contained in extensive multi-criterion analyses. Multicriterion analyses are being carried out in the European Union at the level of the Community in order to estimate the effects of the development of the Transeuropean Transport Networks (e.g. EUNET, SASI and IASON studies).
