The article presents the basic trends in intelligent transport systems (ITS) development in Europe in the last years. It starts from giving a general background of the most important events (congresses) in a history of ITS development in the world (1994-2006). A short explanation of basic terminology used in the field of intelligent transport in the light of the KAREN project is added. Next the article gives a brief survey of information on the key events for the development of ITS in Europe. First of them is a white book on European transport policy up to 2010, published in September 2001. The next one is the TEMPO programme on ITS deployment (2001-2006) in the EU15 countries. Later the deployment of ITS in Central Europe countries, before joining the EU, is presented. Then the article shows a vision of DG TERN EC on ITS deployment in an enlarged UE, presented at two conference in 2003 (Warsaw, Dusseldorf). Later it depicts a new programme, called CONNECT, as a opportunity for ITS deployment in Central Europe countries in the near future, especially in Poland. Finally it gives some basic information on a European congress on ITS in Budapest in 2004. The events are presented by giving information on basic issues of ITS, declared in the documents and taken at the meetings. The article ends with some concluding remarks.
