The development of international economic cooperation, which is connected with the globalization of the marketplace, leads to bigger exposure to competition from enterprises operating in the same market sector. This paper aims to analyze key factors in gaining competitive advantage. It particularly focuses on the impact of transport infrastructure upon business environment. Business environment, including business infrastructure, can exert much bigger influence on competitiveness than internal factors such as low potential of enterprises. Despite considerable economic resources, many enterprises cannot realize their potential because of unfavorable social and economic environment. External threats become particularly serious when enteiprises cannot use their capacity to the full. Their development is prevented by market competition. Accordingly, in the more and more internationalized economy transport infrastructure becomes a crucial element determining competitiveness of enterprises operating on the global market. The development of transport infrastructure must rise to the challenges connected with the global economy.
