The Polish inland shipping operators have lately been facing strong competition within the industry and between industries, both domestic and foreign, accompanied by adverse changes in the structure of demand. The paper presents the general tendencies in the development of the inland waterways transport in Poland and the conditions in which the Polish inland shippers function on the European Union market. It also presents the needs of the river carriers with reference to the management of transport activities in inland shipping. One of the key tasks is now to integrate this branch with the developing domestic as well as international logistics systems. Accomplishing this aim will not be possible unless modern techniques and methods of information exchange via the internet, that is e-business activities, are implemented.
