The paper presents membrane separation processes involving ion exchange membranes: monopolar electrodi-alysis, bipolar electrodialysis and other electrodialysis-related processes such as diffusion dialysis and Donnan dialysis. The principles of the processes, as well as related phenomena, are described. Major applications of electromembrane processes in water and wastewater treatment and in the recovery of valuable components from industrial wastewater are discussed. On the basis of the literature, it was found that the most important use where electrodialysis applies is production of drinking water from brackish water. Another common application of the process is the recovery of water and valuable metal salts from electroplating rinse water. Of great importance is also diffusion dialysis-widely used process allowing the recovery of some components (especially acids) from industrial wastewater.
