General characteristics of membrane bioreactors are presented. The main advantages and disadvantages of the reactors are discussed with respect to their structure and the mode of operation, kind of a biocatalyst, and membrane properties. Their applications in important fields of chemical, pharmaceutical, and environmental engineering are discussed, too.
