Textiles used in hospital applications, especially those applied in clean rooms, eg. surgical gowns and drapes are medical products forming a barrier to infections. Barrier textiles should protect against the penetration and soaking through harmful, pathogenic agents. The risk of infection depends on: barrier efficiency of drapes for an operative field, duration of given surgical procedure and the humidity/ moisture of the operative field. General recommendations, test methods and requirements of the properties of textiles for hospital applications are described in a three-part standard PN-EN 13795. The need to assess textiles conformity with the requirements of this standard involved the usage of test methods of determining the resistance to wet bacterial penetration according to the standard PN-EN ISO 22610. This method is based on joined action of friction, liquid penetration and micro-organisms migration. Bacteria can penetrate from donor material through test specimen down to agar surface. Several tests were performed for polyester woven fabric and reference material according to the method of the above mentioned standard and using the apparatud RULLA II (Schütt Labortechnik GmbH). The barrier index of tested woven fabrics reached 2.8 which is close to the critical value of the resistance to wet bacterial penetration. These tests allow to state that tested woven fabrics did not conform to the high requirements obliging the areas of high probability of infectious agents transfer. Moderate penetration qualifies these woven fabrics for textiles applied in areas where standard performance of textiles is required - for critical and less critical product areas as well. The implementation of the test method conforming to the standard PN-EN ISO 22610 allows for the quality and applicability assessment of textile products for hospital applications because only textiles meeting the requirements of the standard PN-EN ISO 13795 can be applied as drapes and gowns.
