New technology of vacuum trioxane crystallization from water solutions

Trioxane (C6H6O3) is formed during catalytic polymerization of the formaldehyde. Separation is carried out from a gas or liquid mixture including part of the unprocessed stock and the by-products like: methanol, formic acid, methylal, methyl formate and others, by means of: extraction, distillation, melt crystallization or cooling crystallization. In this paper the kinetics of vacuum crystallization from solution, chemical composition of vapour and crystals hardness versus the temperature of the process have been presented, respectively. It has been found that trioxane is a well-crystallized substance with a relatively high effective growth rate and with simultaneously big resistance to attrition. In the light of the presented data the vacuum method of trioxane crystallization seems to be a promising alternative instead of the cooling crystallization, as the cooling solution generates an intensive incrustation on the heat exchangers surfaces and simultaneously is vastly energy consuming. The proposed method eliminates these difficulties. Additionally, the simplicity of operating and the economic indexes like capital costs or energy consumption are propitious in comparison to the cooling method.
