Studies were performed on the production of highly dispersed silica from the aqueous solution of sodium metasilicate using the waste ammonium chloride, a by-product of soda production according to the technique of Solvay. Silica was precipitated at various molar ratios of sodium metasilicate to ammonium chloride, ranging from 2.0 to 1.0. The significant aim of the undertaken studies involved the estimation of the total ammonia content in the filtrate obtained, following silica precipitation and determining the volume ratio of the substrates at which no ammonia was present in the gaseous phase. The total ammonia content was established using the formaldehyde method. One of the basic aims of the studies, involved also the application of the sodium metasilicate solution for the recovery of ammonia. In such conditions, apart from the recovered ammonia, the precipitated highly dispersed silica was also obtained, the product of high industrial significance.
