W większości przypadków wystepowania frettingu rola korozji jest znacząca, w wielu jednak przypadkach inne zjawiska decydują o przebiegu uszkadzania i zużywania WW. W niektórych przypadkach korozja może w ogóle nie występować w procesie fretingu np. przy braku tlenu lub kiedy węzeł styku tworzą materiały odporne na korozję.

Fretting is a complex process of surface layer destruction. Its mechanism depends on kind of material of fretted couple, environment, force and movement conditions. Corrosion is of big importance for fretting process especially in dry conditions but is still only one of the process components. There are many fretting conditions in which corrosion is negligible. Identification of the fretting as a corrosion which is often spotted is therefore a mistake. The role and importance of the corrosion in fretting processs is shortly described. The wear results of mild steel couples lubricated with mineral and synthetic greases containing EP additives are presented. EP additive in both mineral and synthetic grease in concentration more than 2% caused increased fretting wear. Addition of anticorrosion component (lithium sulfonate), molybdenum disulphide or graphite in concentration at least 2% eliminated disadvantageous EP effect.
