Designing of concrete structures according to the concept of the limit states theory requires verification of the ultimate limit state ULS as well as the serviceability limit state SLS. The limit states of a structure are idealized states beyond which the structure does not meet certain structural or functional design requirements. Fulfillment of the criteria of ultimate limit states guarantees the safe operation of the structure, taking into account the size and nature of the load in the expected life time (aspect of changes in the value and nature of the load, the effects of fatigue, etc.). On the other hand meeting the serviceability limit state allows for the fulfillment of the assumed comfort and durability criteria of the analyzed structure. Verification of the limit states in terms of PN-EN codes is based on the convention of partial safety factors, applying the appropriate combinations of actions, using the appropriate combination coefficients vj/ as well as load factors y. In the paper authors give general rules for checking the SLS in concrete bridges. The limit states together with appropriate criteria given in the EC2 are discussed. Specific rules for the combinations of actions used in checking the SLS of concrete road bridges with adequate commentary are provided
