The model and analysis concerning comparison between different FEM approaches for permanent magnet commutator machines arc presented. The results obtained for the magneto-static field analysis with both 3D and modified 2D FEM models have been compared during non-load operation and under load condition. The 3D analysis shows the differences in magnetic field distribution in the machine air-gap for the armature with both skewed and non-skewed slots. The magnetic field 3D analysis results confirm the chosen presumptions for the modified 2D modelling of the machine with the modified machine geometry and modified demagnetization curves of magnets.
