Rozwój w zakresie technologii produkcji farb musi uwzględniać obecnie nie tylko wymagania jakościowe, ale również aspekty ochrony zdrowia i środowiska. Legislacja w zakresie zmniejszenia szkodliwego wpływu farb na środowisko dotyczy głównie ograniczenia emisji lotnych związków organicznych (VOC). Głównym źródłem lotnych substancji organicznych (VOC), pochodzących z wyrobów lakierowych są rozpuszczalniki organiczne. Omówiono szkodliwe działanie VOC w atmosferze oraz przepisy ograniczające emisję VOC w UE i ich transpozycję do prawodawstwa krajowego.

Nowadays progress in paint technology must take into consideration not only quality requirements but also aspects concerning health and environment protection. The principal objective of legislation concerning environment protection is the limitation of VOC (volatile organic compounds) emission. Organic solvents are considered as a main source of VOC from paints. The harmful influence of VOC on atmosphere and regulations limiting VOC emission in EU as well as their implementation to national legislation have been discussed.
