Effectiveness of transportation on the Oder Waterway

The effectiveness of inland water-borne transportation on the Oder Waterway is determined by the stretch of freely running Oder River, especially the stretch between Brzeg Dolny and the mouth of the Nysa Łużycka River. Sections of the lowest binding transit depth appear along this stretch. The depth varies in time and limits the ship draught allowed on specific day. Cumulative data on duration of individual depths are little useful in evaluation of transport effectiveness. Important are the data that describe the day-by-day variation of depth, so that one can determine draught of ship to pass the specific route in consecutive days. Three kinds of trips typical for the freely running Oder River have been assumed in analysis namely: Wroclaw - Szczecin, Szczecin - Wroclaw and return trip Wroclaw - Szczecin - Wrocław. Each of those trips is distinguished by the duration of voyage that depends on ship draught and speed. Duration of depths specified for selected kinds of trips were determined on the base of data from period 1980-2000. A factor was introduced that is defined as the ratio between the amount of shipped cargo and the costs of respective transport work including costs of building of vessels. The amount of shipped cargo (during the specified period, e.g. 1 year) is determined taking account of for the number of trips possible at various ship draughts. For determined durations of depths the factor is a function of moulded draught, arrangement of barges in a train, length and width of vessel, ship speed. Considering the obtained results one can accept that basic factors that promote the effectiveness of inland water-borne transportation are as follows: transit depth constant in time and main particularities of the largest vessels allowed on the specific waterway. Moulded draught and length of vessel are fundamental.
