The article describes a complex of concepts and methods for pre-mathematical design and analysis of hierarchic systems aiming to model at a time both many aspects of systems and their general hierarchic features before choosing the appropriate mathematical tools for handling applied systems, varying from operations research, theory of hierarchy, network theory and its expansions, control theory ands methods supplementing it, etc. The conceptual complex was given the name 'theory of general hierarchy'. Its foundations are explained the way they are needed to guide the person, who is modeling hierarchic systems, or generally - complex objects showing or alleged to show systems features. The theory is especially efficient for revealing interactions among systems or joint action of a multitude of systems of diverse nature. A short overview is given on the conceptual basis and its use. Main emphasize is given both to the determining the type of general hierarchy(-ies) needed for an adequate modeling of hierarchic system(s) and the rules to operate with them without destroying the type(s) of general hierarchies carrying the system(s) model. These types and rules are classified in tables, which can be used as a systems operator's manual although they are not explained in every detail.
