Interactions of aqueous drops with electrodes in dielectric liquids

The electrostatic force on aqueous droplets suspended in dielectric liquids has been determined experimentally. The non-uniform alternating electric field was produced by using a two-electrode system consisting of wire (cylindrical electrode) and a planar electrode. By closely matching densities of the drop and the suspending liquid (decane/carbon tetrachloride mixture), video camera recording of the drop trajectory became feasible. Prom the trajectory analysis the horizontal velocity of the drop directed toward the wire electrode was determined. The electrostatic force was calculated by assuming the Oseen formula for the hydrodynamic resistance coefficient. The experimental data were interpreted in terms of the theoretical expression derived for the two-cylinder geometry. A good correlation between the experimental results and theory was found confirming that the electrostatic force is proportional to the cube of the drop size, square of the voltage, and inversely proportional to the cube of the distance from the electrode.
