A methodology for characterizing the phase composition of aggregates floating inside an industrial separation cell (based on the Luba Tube Sampling Technique, LTST) is presented. The LTST enables observation and recording of phenomena occurring inside a processing vessel by guiding a flux of floating aggregates into the tube, and monitoring them above the edge of the separation vessel. Aggregate sizes and positions are determined on sequences of video images. Rise velocities of aggregates are determined by measuring the displacements of their positions between the consecutive frames. Rising velocity of the empty bubbles and air-bitumen aggregates were determined in the separation cell. Contents of air and of solids in the floating aggregates are calculated from differences between their velocities and velocities of unloaded bubbles of the same size. As an example, the contents of bitumen-air aggregates obtained during processing of a selected oilsand were evaluated. It was found that the average aggregate had a diameter of 0.32š0.20 mm and contained approximately 2.2*10(-5) g of bitumen.
