Theoretical principles of neutron activation analysis (NAA) are briefly described and the general schemes of instrumental (INAA) and radiochemical (RNAA) variants of the method are given. The unique merits of NAA which assure its high position among other methods of inorganic trace analysis are emphasized. Comparisons of NAA with some spectroscopic and other methods are presented. A short review of applications of NAA in various domains of science and technology is given and less common applications as molecular AA and derivative AA are mentioned. Unique properties of NAA i.e. practical absence of blank, the fact that this is a method based on nuclear properties of individual isotopes of an element and good accuracy at low concentration levels, are the reason why NAA is often used for verification of accuracy of other analytical methods and certification of the candidate reference materials. The decisive role of NAA in the certification of the candidate reference materials is emphasized.

Przedstawiono pokrótce teoretyczne podstawy neutronowej analizy aktywacyjnej (N AA) oraz zaprezentowano ogólny schemat N AA zarówno w wersji czysto instrumentalnej (INAA) jaki i radiochemicznej (RNAA). Podkreślono unikatowe zalety NAA, dzięki którym zajmuje ona wysoką pozycje, wśród innych metod nieorganicznej analizy śladowej. Porównano NAA z metodami spektroskopowymi i innymi.
