Modification of the thermorheological properties of coal tar pitch by adding of selected poly(ethylene terephthalate) process waste product

Results are described of the studies intended to establish the effect of the PET process glycol recovery step waste fraction composed of terephthalates and mono and diethylene glycols used as additive, on the thermorheological properties of coal tar pitch and on the reduction of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) content in the pitch. When added to coal tar pitch, the glycol recovery residue was found to plastify the pitch and at the same time to enhance its thermal stability. With -30% residue added to the pitch, the content of B[a]P was found to be reduced by about 90%. A formulation was developed to prepare sealing-and-insulating materials by using the binder based on the pitch/ester-and-glycol-waste blend. The composition made up from the pitch and the glycol recovery residue was found to yield an environmentally safe binder to be used in sealing-and-insulatingmaterials, e.g., in filling and jointing materials for the building industry.
